Is Sri Lanka’s IMF deal in jeopardy?

MP Candidate Keshal Jayasinghe demands answers on economic strategy.

Keshal Jayasinghe, an international political affairs analyst and a candidate for the Colombo district in the upcoming General Election under the ‘Cylinder’ symbol, expressed concerns over the apparent deadlock in negotiations between the Sri Lankan government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking at a gathering, Jayasinghe criticised the lack of transparency regarding the Government’s discussions with the IMF and the potential implications for the country’s economy.

Jayasinghe highlighted the public’s eagerness for clarity on the progress of these discussions. He noted that following a recent government delegation’s return from Washington, there is widespread anticipation for President Anura Dissanayake, who also serves as the finance minister, to address the nation. Jayasinghe stated, “People want to know where Sri Lanka stands with the IMF, whether the next loan installment will be granted, the timeline, and any new conditions attached to the aid.”

The issue has garnered broader political interest, with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently urging President Dissanayake to update the public on the country’s economic strategy. Wickremesinghe, referencing his own tenure, stated that it was standard practice to keep the parliament and citizens informed about IMF agreements and terms. He further suggested that the government clarify whether it plans to alter the IMF’s debt sustainability requirements or adjust tax policies, including potential reductions in value-added taxes.
